On Teesside in February we mark the first action of the British Battalion of the XV International Brigade at our annual Jarama commemoration.Thirty two Teesside born men volunteered to defend democracy and served in the International Brigade in Spain, of whom ten lost their lives.
Ten Teesside volunteers who lost their lives defending democracy in Spain are commemorated on the Teesside International Brigade memorial ( https://foxburg.edublogs.org/2021/02/22/teesside-ib-memorial/) which in inside Middlesbrough Town Hall. We will be holding the Jarama commemoration outside The Olive Branch ( https://www.facebook.com/people/The-Olive-Branch/61583839679814/ ) in the Wasps Nest Yard at our Beautiful Stockton International Brigade memorial.
Five Teesside volunteers lost their lives at the Battle of Jarama in February 1937, this was the first engagement for the British Battalion of the XV International Brigade. We will remember the volunteers who lost their lives at Jarama, defending Spain from a Fascist invasion, and then raise a glass in their honour in the recently opened Songbird.
