Barney McAll is one of Australia’s most visionary and uncompromising musical voices—a GRAMMY-nominated, ARIA-winning pianist, composer and producer whose work continually defies categorisation. He has released 28 acclaimed solo albums, performed on more than 100 recordings, and collaborated with artists including Sia, Daniel Merriweather, Gary Bartz, Dewey Redman, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Harper and Roy Ayers.
Born in Melbourne, McAll studied at the Victorian College of the Arts under Paul Grabowsky and Mike Nock before relocating to New York in the 1990s. There, he co-founded the influential Groove Collective and developed his distinctive voice performing at venues including the Village Vanguard.
His diverse catalogue spans spiritual jazz, experimental pop-jazz and improvisation, including the ARIA-winning Mooroolbark and acclaimed Precious Energy, described by Rolling Stone as “world-class.”
Since returning to Australia in 2016, McAll has become an influential educator and mentor, lecturing at VCA and Monash University and supporting emerging artists through programs including the Australian Art Orchestra and Freedman Fellowship.
An adventurous and endlessly creative musician, McAll continues to challenge convention, explore new possibilities and inspire the next generation of Australian artists.
