From the smallest of seeds, the greatest things grow.
Barley is among the oldest known seeds used to sustain life in the history of humanity. A member of the grass family, it became one of the first domesticated grains of the region of the Fertile Crescent, and the Nile river of Egypt. Wild Barley was also amply found on the island of Crete, and at the southern end of the Sea of Galilee.
The Bible has much to say about barley. Listed as one of the seven agricultural products of the Promised Land, the presence of barley indicated the blessing of God. It was considered a staple product, one used in bread, barley cakes, or as porridge. It would also be used as a supplement for cattle and other livestock.
Just as a mustard seed is capable of producing a tree that birds choose to nest in, so it is with the humble barley seed when viewed through the lens of revelation and the Law of First Mention. The spiritual impact of this little regarded grain has big implications for the Kingdom of God today.
We will explore barley in a fresh manner, ultimately arriving at a scriptural understanding of the “Barley Company” a term that is synonymous with a group of individuals who have a specific role to play in God’s Kingdom plan.
