This beginners’ Hatha yoga class will take an in-depth look at The Bandhas. In yoga classes, you have probably heard about these internal energy locks. Many yoga teachers regularly use the phrase: “Activate your Bandhas” in their instructions, but these are rarely explained further.
Traditional yogic texts such as the ‘Hatha Yoga Pradipika’ describe Bandhas as important practices used to support breath control and internal awareness. Remember, we must develop this practice with patience and proper guidance.
In this class, we will take a look at the four main Bandhas, their benefits and how to activate them in your practice.
1. MULA BANDHA - THE ROOT LOCK
Location: The pelvic floor.
Purpose: It seals the lower end of the spinal column. It directs energy upward, supports the lower back, and calms the autonomous nervous system.
2. UDDIYANA BANDHA - THE ABDOMINAL LOCK
Location: The core and abdominal organs.
Purpose: It stimulates digestion, boosts blood circulation, and creates a strong foundation for core strength.
3. JALANDHARA BANDHA - THE THROAT LOCK
Location: The throat.
Purpose: It seals the upper end of the spinal column, regulates the respiratory and circulatory systems, and stimulates the thyroid gland to balance metabolism.
4. MAHA BANDHA - THE GREAT LOCK
Location: The throat, the abdomen and pelvic floor simultaneously.
Purpose: It maximises the distribution of energy and provides a profound sense of balance and meditative focus.
Come along and discover how the Bandhas elevate your yoga practice by anchoring your core stability, improving spinal alignment, and redirecting prana or life force energy.
The Bandhas transform your movements from superficial postures into deeply supported, controlled and intentional expressions of physical and mental alignment.
All classes are for beginners and take place at Crescent Yoga Studio at St Anne’s Tennis Club FY8 2QH. The yoga studio is fully equipped so you don’t need to bring anything with you, unless you prefer to use your own mat and blanket etc.
