The Backsell with Jason Vivone - Bonnie Bramlett!
In his monthly program, Jason will guide us through a selection of recordings by artists who may or may not be household names but have all added to our musical lexicon.
Segment highlights:
*** MISSOURI MASTERWORKS pays tribute to St. Louis's own, super-souful vocalist, Bonnie Bramlett. She is a powerhouse vocalist who made history as the first white Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before rising to fame in the late 60s as half of the influential blue-eyed soul duo Delaney & Bonnie.
*** LADIES WHO SWING THE BAND features the delightful and sadly forgotten, Eileen Barton, a vocalist best known for her 1950 million-selling smash hit, "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake," which became one of the definitive novelty records of the early pop era. A former child performer on the vaudeville circuit and a protégé of Frank Sinatra, she made frequent appearances on major radio and television programs throughout the 1940s and 50s..
*** Bob Dylan has inspired songwriters through the years but on THE GUITAR GRIND we'll spend some time with guitarists who burned their way through Dylan material. Jason will touch on several such slingers including Hendrix, Michael Hedges, Tom Pricipato and Danny Gatton.
*** THE WHOLE MAGILLA focuses on the 2005 release from Old Hat Records GOOD FOR WHAT AILS YOU (Music of the Medicine Shows 1926-1937.) Before motion pictures... before radio... before television... the traveling medicine shows brought entertainment to America.
Just like in radio broadcasting, Jason will "backsell" each set, providing insightful commentary and anecdotes that illuminate the history, influences, and cultural significance of the music you're hearing. It's a chance to rediscover old favorites, discover new gems, and gain a deeper appreciation for the art of recorded sound.
