This is the story of teenage Jed - 'Oxy' in its earlier pages - an oddball outsider who discovers a liking for birds but is baffled by everything else. A hard book to describe, its sometimes-comic narrative includes teenage paranoia, obsessions, eating disorders, religious sectarianism, repression, working-class life, father/son relationships, and wild birds' eggs. Underpinned by a fascination for the natural world, it is emphatically not of the 'plashy fen' school of nature writing. At root it is about the small moments, intently described, which are, ultimately, all we have.
