https://athenslibrary.libcal.com/event/13130673Everyone knows that the Classic City is the birthplace of several prominent bands including the B-52s, REM, and Widespread Panic, to name a few. But what was it like before that? Join the Heritage Room for a trip down memory lane and see what the local music scene was like in the 1950s and 1960s. Chris Jones will include rare newspaper advertisements, posters, and stories about the early bands that emerged from Athens and traveled the Southeast within this dynamic presentation. And participants will hear little-known stories of the role the University’s social organizations played in social and political change on campus and beyond.
Chris Jones is a retired Vice President of Government Affairs for Verizon Wireless. A graduate of the University of Georgia, he worked in radio news/sports in Athens and Atlanta before joining Verizon. In retirement, Jones is an avid music collector and researcher. He is an alumnus of the 1985 Leadership Georgia class. Check out some of his writing for BOOM Magazine: https://boomathens.com/white-fraternities-and-black-music-in-the-early-60s/
