About this Event

The Athenaeum is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with Smithdown Social Arts Hub, a dynamic creative arts social enterprise, to host a series of themed local artist exhibitions. This ongoing project will feature unique exhibitions from local artist, intertwining contemporary local artistry with the rich cultural art heritage of Liverpool.

Bringing Art to Historic Spaces

For over 220 years, The Athenaeum has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s business and cultural community. Now, this historic venue will open its doors to local artists, offering them a prestigious platform to showcase their work. The exhibition will be thoughtfully curated to draw connections between modern artistic expressions and the vast array of artifacts contained within The Athenaeum’s collections, celebrating the city's artistic legacy.

Supporting Local Artists and Community Engagement

"This collaboration is an incredible opportunity for local artists to display their talents in a renowned setting, while also allowing the public to engage with Liverpool’s storied past through art," said Brenda Monahan, Director at Smithdown Social Arts Hub. "We are grateful to The Athenaeum for their generous in-kind support, providing us with an exceptional venue that enhances the visibility and impact of our project."

‘We are delighted to be working with Smithdown Social Arts Hub to provide a platform to local artists within the Athenaeum for what is a first for the Club. We look forward to welcoming members of the public to the Athenaeum to enjoy these local pieces as well as taking in the artwork of local artists which have adorned our walls during many years of the Athenaeum’s history. Our thanks to Brenda Monahan in particular for her massive contribution towards this project’. Roger Phillips, Chair of the Athenaeum.

Event Highlights

  • Themed Exhibition: The first exhibition will run for 3 months, featuring a selection of local artists and their unique expression of the theme.

  • Public Access: The public will have the chance to view the first exhibition most Thursday and Friday evenings from September 19th to November 29th, with guests being able to view historical artwork by local Liverpool artists and artifacts relating to Liverpool from the private collection of The Athenaeum.

  • The grand Newsroom: Access will be given to the public during open evenings to view the historic artwork decorating the walls of this iconic room and socialise where many of Liverpool’s greatest business minds historically gathered to build the foundations of the great city, and at times, for the appreciation of the arts.

  • Glass of Athenaeum label club wine: Enjoy a glass of the Athenaeum's own label wine or a soft drink following the viewing.

The exhibition will open to the general public on September 13th. If you wish to attend this event as a buyer please RSVP to [email protected] .

Smithdown Social Arts Hub is dedicated to nurturing local talent and making the arts accessible to all. Through exhibitions, workshops, and community projects, we aim to inspire and connect people through creativity.

About The Athenaeum

Since 1797 the Athenaeum has provided a sanctuary, welcoming those individuals and organisations playing an active and influential role in the social, cultural and business development of the Liverpool City Region. Known for its extensive library and historical collections, it is one of the oldest private members clubs in the world, predating many of its London counterparts.

Located in the heart of the city centre, the Club welcomes applications from both individuals and businesses, and offers a multitude of benefits, not least the prestige and fellowship that comes with joining a social, cultural and business hub like The Athenaeum.
