The Artistry of Keiko Abe: Exploring Themes of Nature,Love, and Japanese Folksong in Her Works
Building on themes that emerged in a recent Tokyo interview with Ms. Abe, this lecture demonstration by Dr Andrew Wiering explores the profound influence the natural world, love, and Japanese folksong have on Abe’s solo marimba oeuvre. A pioneering figure in contemporary marimba and percussion repertoire, Abe’s innovations to the marimba as an instrument alongside her active commissioning of new repertoire and her own compositions have secured her place as the doyen of marimba. Through analysis and performance, this lecture demonstration examines how Abe draws on
traditional Japanese melodic and aesthetic sensibilities to create her own sound world of remarkable emotional depth. The presentation aims to illuminate the intersection of cultural identity and musical innovation that defines Abe’s enduring contribution to the percussive arts and ontemporary Japanese music.
