Join Alaska-based visiting artist and award-winning oil painter Kayley Smith for The Art of Living Water—a two-day workshop focused entirely on painting water. Learn how to observe, mix, and capture movement, light, and reflection to make water feel alive on canvas. Techniques apply to any subject, from coastal waves and tide pools to lakes, rivers, and reflective ponds.Water is one of the most captivating, and most humbling, subjects in oil painting. It moves. It reflects. It holds the whole sky in its surface, breaks apart in the current, and goes still again in the quiet of a cove. Painting it well means understanding light, color, and mood all at once.
In The Art of Living Water, award-winning oil painter Kayley Smith devotes two full days entirely to water — how to see it, how to mix it, how to make it shimmer and breathe on canvas. The techniques you will learn apply to any water subject: the emerald Gulf just outside your door, a glassy mountain lake at sunrise, a rushing river catching the afternoon light, a tide pool, a coastal wave, or a still reflecting pond.
Kayley's perspective on water has been shaped by years of painting in Alaska — glacial lakes, icy rivers, mist-covered bays, and the way arctic light turns water into something almost electric. She brings that depth of experience into the workshop, sharing the exact techniques behind her experience, in a warm, approachable way that works for painters at every level.
Over two days, you will explore reflections, movement, stillness, color temperature in water, the relationship between sky and surface, and how to give your water paintings that sense of life — that quality that makes a viewer stop and feel something. Kayley's patient, encouraging teaching style makes this workshop genuinely welcoming for beginners while offering real substance for painters who have been at it for years.
You will leave with at least one completed water painting, a set of skills you can bring to any subject, and a new way of seeing every body of water you encounter.
“Creating beauty in a dark world through paintings that tell stories people can feel.”
