A festive celebration of geometry! There will be a 1 hour public talk from mathematician Marcy Robertson, followed by refreshments and activities, puzzles and crafts, conversation and entertainment.
About the talk
From Escher’s angels and devils to the repeating patterns beneath our feet, tilings invite a deceptively simple question: how can shapes fit together to fill space? The answer leads from art to symmetry, from puzzles about repeating patterns to the strange world of aperiodic tiles, and from flat surfaces to curved geometries where our usual intuition begins to fail.
This interactive public lecture will use tilings as a visual route into some beautiful mathematics. We will ask what it means for a pattern to repeat, how artists and mathematicians use symmetry, and why tiling problems are not just decorative puzzles but windows into the geometry of space itself. Along the way, we will see how the mathematics behind Escher’s work connects to deeper questions about whether the universe is flat, curved, finite, or infinite.
No mathematical background is required. Just bring your eyes, your imagination, and a willingness to think about space differently.
