Arts Out East are proud to present a series highlighting artists that share connections to East Auckland area.
Each invited artist will talk to their work and their practice in their chosen local café. This free series aims to break the formal nature of artist talks and support local business. All we ask while you sit and hear from the artist, you buy a hot or cold drink to support the chosen local business. Think good vibes, great art chat and supporting local with a nice beverage.
Introducing Ngaroma Riley (Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri, Pākehā) is an artist, project coordinator, and people connector based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. She is known for her karetao (hand-carved puppets) and love of chainsaws. A co-founder of Shared Lines, Ngaroma began her carving journey making buddhist statues while living and working in Japan. Since returning to Aotearoa in 2020 she has completed a Certificate in Whakairo at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. In 2022 she made her first public work as part of a team who built a Tomokanga in Kaitaia and was shortlisted for the Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award in 2023. She is currently the Papatunga artist in residence, with her studio based at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga.
