How does colour function in art? Is its symbolism informed by history? Why do we perceive colours the way we do? This workshop will explore the multifaceted role of colour in art, offering participants a deep dive into its seductive, subjective, and relational aspects. Led by Dr Meg Walch, this two hour session will combine a thought-provoking presentation with hands-on, practical exercises designed to expand your understanding of colour’s complexity.
Participants will engage in a series of creative activities, including the mixing of acrylic paints to create custom colour wheels. We will explore two methods: a primary colour wheel (red, blue, yellow) and a more complex 12-colour wheel. You’ll not only learn to blend colours but also craft circular wheels that will become dynamic thread spinners when pierced and spun. On the reverse side, participants will mix shades of grey, transitioning from black to white, to complete their projects.
This workshop provides the perfect opportunity to better understand colour theory, experiment with acrylics, and deepen your awareness of how colour shapes our visual experience. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this session will leave you with fresh insights into the way we use and perceive colour in art.
