Life modelling can be a rewarding part-time source of income, an educational and inspirational strand of your artistic practice, a synergistic communion with other artists, and a means to better understand your body, the practice of representation, and the symbolic values of the human figure.
NOT CONFIDENT? NO PROBLEM…
The art world is very body-positive! You don’t need to be especially fit to be a life model - the industry thrives on variety, so while health, youth and beauty are in high demand, there’s also plenty of work for fatter, thinner, less athletic, homelier and older people - to artists, all humans are beautiful. All you need is a knowledge of how to pose in this specialist context: a creative, highly individual and potentially inspiring process. Life modelling is a form of performance art, and an ancient and respected tradition in the fine arts. It’s also a handy source of income for anyone looking for uncomplicated part-time, casual employment.
ABOUT THE TEACHER
This one-day workshop is devised and run by one of Sydney’s most popular and experienced life models, Jaqi Pascoe (NAS, AGNSW, COTA, Sydney Sculpture School, Tom Bass SS, Julian Ashton, RAS, etc). Jaqi has more than twenty years’ modelling experience, working with teachers and artists across Sydney including sketch clubs, art schools, painters, sculptors and photographers. She has also modelled in Melbourne, Brisbane and London. A multidisciplinary artist, her own work can be found at jacklaurianpascoe.com and on TikTok and YouTube as Philosophilia.
ABOUT THE COURSE
The course is designed to give you a comprehensive introduction to the art of modelling for artists and the workings of the small but flourishing life-modelling industry in Sydney and beyond. On completing the course you will be fully equipped with the necessary knowledge to enter the business and, if you wish, already have a gig booked.

FAQs
WILL I HAVE TO UNDRESS?
During the workshop, no… If you get work (and Jaqi guarantees you at least one job if you successfully complete the workshop), yes, almost certainly. “Draped” (clothed) sessions are one in a hundred.
Life drawing is an artist’s technical training session, a constant and regular requirement. In a tradition dating back to the Renaissance (when underwear as we know it didn’t exist), models are nude to give an unimpeded view of the form, its structure, musculature, etc. Some sessions welcome or require drapes, props or other elements: sessions with schoolchildren usually require a g-string or body stocking. A small number of models specialise in clothed portrait modelling but opportunities are limited, although cabaret and club sessions are increasingly popular.
SURELY IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE? (Why would I pay $150 for…)
No - but it’s trickier than you might think, and you need to be good at it to make regular income. A model can earn $35-60/hr (venues vary widely) and highly skilled models can work full-time if they wish, though most models prefer to leave time for other arts practice or pursuits. Some have 9-5 jobs and supplement their income with evening and weekend modelling. Many are students or retirees. The successful ones know there are three things bookers look for: availability, reliability, and skill on the daïs. The more you want to earn, the more you need to understand about this historic craft.
SO WHAT WILL WE DO ON THE DAY?
The course covers protocols, technique, conditions, pay rates and systems, certifications, taxes and contacts, and includes a brief outline and discussion of the cultural, social and historical aspects of the tradition, the profession and the process itself. It’s a relaxed, small group session and you’ll make most of the fee back in your first paid booking (guaranteed on successfully completing the course).
