Hey Milwaukee,I hope you are well and off to a great start to Meteorological Summer as of June 1st. You are especially invited to the Aquapoetics Poetry & Music showcase dedicated to the importance of water. Milwaukee Water Commons and I have assembled 10 fly poets who are great performers and community members to extinguish this event.
The chosen Aquapoets are Blue Lotus, Amarion Herbert, Sonia Erika, Lature Elizabeth Carter, Marika Holbusz, Emmitt James, Kathrine Yets, my favorite local poet Darlin Nikki Janzen, and current Milwaukee Poet Laureate, Auntie Shelly Conley. Last, but not least, the curator, host, and poet, me, Kavon Cortez Jones.
The poetry and music showcase will mark the end of my Milwaukee Water Common’s Artist-in-Residency which I received Spring-Summer 2025 thanks to MWC’s Creative Arts Manager, Melanie Ariens. The residency’s journey consisted of three of what Melanie called “Water School.”
The water sessions occurred inside of Havenwoods State Forest Resource Center (6/25/25), Menominee Valley Urban Ecology Center (7/19/25), and a city escape to Mauthe Lake up north in Campbellsport, Wisconsin (8/16/25).
I learned so much about water and how lucky we are to live in a city of Milwaukee next to our biggest geographical accessory, Lake Michigan.
I was so honored to be a part of the journey.
Saturday, June 13th, 2026, 5-7pm in Near West Side’s new Art Intersection (3542 W. Vliet St.), three amorphous relics of Poetry, Music, and Water will polymerize as one to create a memorable, relaxing afternoon of merriment…
So…
Come jump toward the sky, intellectually dive in our poetic and whimsical wit about water.
Milwaukee Water Common’s and I cannot wait to see you there.
Bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the afternoon.
Kavon Cortez Jones with Love & Gratitude 💙💙💙
(End Goal: Our friends and community member of Milwaukee Water Commons and Art Intersection want attendees to leave inspired to become a part of the spoken word culture, learned new aspects about water and made new friends. Most importantly to tell your colleagues about the amazing afternoon you experienced.)
