Synopsis: L'adaptation cinématographique du livre de Mordecai Richler conserve la richesse de l'original et son sens du caractère, grâce à une excellente mise en scène de Ted Kotcheff et aux excellentes prestations de Micheline Lanctôt, Jack Warden, Randy Quaid, Joseph Wiseman et Denholm Elliott, ainsi qu'à l'interprétation intrépide de Richard Dreyfuss dans le rôle d'un jeune homme juif vivant à Montréal en 1948.

Synopsis: The film adaptation of Mordecai Richler's book retains the richness of the original and its strong sense of character, thanks to Ted Kotcheff's excellent direction and standout performances by Micheline Lanctôt, Jack Warden, Randy Quaid, Joseph Wiseman, and Denholm Elliott, as well as Richard Dreyfuss' fearless portrayal of a young Jewish man living in 1948 Montreal.

Kravitz is driven by an insatiable desire to be "somebody," and he manages to win us over even as he cheats, schemes, and plots to buy a large piece of land. He uses the girl who loves him, forges checks, lies… and is immensely proud of himself. Those around him are thoroughly disgusted. We are torn. There is a bit of Duddy Kravitz in all of us.
