About this Event
Jon Haidt's book The Anxious Generation: How the great rewiring of childhood is causing an epidemic of mental illness is sounding the alarm on the damage being done to children's and young people's development and well-being by their use of smart phones and social media. It also highlights the worrying decline of young people's independent, outdoor, risky play which results, in part, from overprotective parenting. The book, which is both meticulously researched and argued, is now an international best-seller.
Haidt, a social psychologist, understands that many parents will find it hard to act on their own to counteract these damaging trends. So, he has made a 40-minute video for parents, educationalists and others concerned about child well-being to watch in groups so they can discuss and, hopefully, plan collective action.
The Centre for Confidence and Well-being, under the leadership of Carol Craig, and Tam Baillie a former Children's Commissioner in Scotland and co-editor of a recent Postcards from Scotland book published by the Centre - Born to Play - have arranged for the showing of Jon Haidt's video in Glasgow city centre on Thursday 6th of November from 5.30-7.30 pm. We hope that you can attend and be part of the discussion, led by Tam and Carol, on how we should respond to the worrying evidence on the harmful effects of new technology on children and young people and what we can do to improve their opportunities for independent play.
