Rebecca Dewey (University of Nottingham)
7pm Tuesday 11th November 2025
in LTG, Lecture Theatre Block, Stag Hill Campus, University of Surrey
Abstract: “This talk provides an introduction to medical imaging: why we do it, how we do it, and what else we can do with it. Rebecca will describe new techniques that can be used to observe how external influences, such as drugs and prosthetics, as well as illnesses and disease, alter how the brain works. She will then describe some of the research she has done and is working on currently and some hopes for future research.”
Bio: “Rebecca obtained an undergraduate master's degree in physics with theoretical physics from the University of Manchester in 2008. From there, she moved to the University of Nottingham to study for her PhD in advanced functional neuroimaging in the Division of Radiological and Imaging Sciences, comprising developing and testing novel functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques to observe the changes in brain activity and blood flow caused by disease or medication, graduating in 2012. Since then, Rebecca has continued to work at the University of Nottingham, based in the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, as part of a long-standing collaboration with The University of Manchester, using MRI and electrophysiology to investigate the neural bases of noise exposure, aging, and hearing loss, and to characterise damage to the auditory system that is currently undetectable by regular audiological testing methods. Rebecca's other work includes MRI of individuals with cochlear implants, and the effect of the MR environment on the human balance system. In her spare time, Rebecca works with AuthorAid to improve the impact and quality of scientific publications produced by researchers working in low-income countries.
