Mario Bakuna is delighted to revisit the American Songbook and reflect on the difficult task of bringing men and women and their everyday lives to the centre of a song. Simplicity really takes a lot of work and this work has been masterfully carried out by composers such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Arlen, who have produced magnificent songs immortalised in the voices of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and so many others.
