This year, The Afghan Whigs celebrate their 40th anniversary. But rather than resting on their laurels, the band returns with renewed energy. On August 21, they will release their new album Soft Control, accompanied by an international tour. Led by frontman Greg Dulli, the band will treat Belgian audiences to no fewer than three concerts, with Ed Harcourt joining them as a special guest.
Since their comeback in 2012, The Afghan Whigs have enjoyed a remarkable second wind. With world tours, appearances on major festival stages, and three critically acclaimed albums—Do to the Beast (2014), In Spades (2017), and How Do You Burn? (2022)—the band has proven that it remains as relevant as ever. Their distinctive blend of gritty grunge, soulful rock, R&B, and a healthy dose of drama effortlessly bridges generations and continues to attract new listeners.
The new album Soft Control, set for release on August 21, perfectly embodies the famous statement by David Bowie that growing older is “an extraordinary process whereby you become the person you always should have been.” The turbulent years of Greg Dulli’s youth have given way to a sharp clarity, infused with a healthy sense of irony. At the same time, his voice sounds more powerful and vulnerable than ever.
On Soft Control, The Afghan Whigs once again showcase their exceptional talent for combining razor-sharp, powerful guitars with an unconventional and daring interpretation of soul and R&B. The first single, Jungle Roux, already offers a promising preview. This tenth studio album marks yet another significant milestone in a unique career and invites listeners to embrace both the light and the darkness.
