About the workshop:
The Actor’s Exercise of Kalakshetra Manipur (Physical & Vocal)-
Kalakshetra Manipur, under the guidance of late Guru Heisnam Kanhailal and Guru Heisnam Sabitri successfully developed a system of exercises in order to make an actor’s body flexible and ready to perform any role given to them. An actor’s body should be like a handful of clay which can be moulded in any form and have the characteristics of vitality, fluidity as well as stability.
Guru Kanhailal developed his own system of actor’s exercise over 20 years of rigorous research on various Manipuri performing arts. This system of exercise is mainly derived from the movement patterns of traditional thang-ta (Manipuri martial art) with consolidation of other performing arts like sankeertana, waree-leeba, Moirang Parva, etc. The aim of the exercise is to de-urbanize the body and rebuild a new body altogether which is more flexible, fluid, vital and stable. An actor needs to keep on doing (riyaz) these exercises in his lifetime as an actor. Moreover, the meditative nature of these exercises connects the actor’s inner and outer being of the body (nung-paan). It is important to connect and balance the inner and outer elements of the body while doing these exercises (nung paan ani tuna chatminnaba).
Guru Kanhailal’s unique theatre is admired by theatre-practitioners, theatre-goers, theatre-lovers as well as critics and scholars.

About the facilitator:
Pangambam Tyson Meitei as an actor and actor-trainer for physical and vocal exercises at Kalakshetra Manipur. He joined Kalakshetra Manipur in Oct. 2008. He started his journey in theatre with full dedication to the gurukul of Kanhailal and Sabitri. He stayed in their place and lived with them learning the intricacies of acting particularly from Heisnam Sabitri. Other senior artistes like A. Upendra, S. Brojen and G.
