The 9/11 Memorial: A 21st Anniversary Tribute to Those We Lost: PART 2 (In-Person Tour).

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 - 2:00 pm.

Please note that this is a new tour, not a repeat of the tour that took place in September 20, 2022.

This will be a continuation of the commemorative tour that was held on September 20. I’ll provide a brief recap of the creation of the 9/11 Memorial for anyone who was not present for that tour.

We’ll resume our tribute to individuals and groups that were critical in providing assistance during the attacks and in the months/years that followed, including:

- The Coast Guard and crews of the vessels who launched what became the largest water rescue since Dunkirk during WW 2, evacuating at least 500,000 people stranded in lower Manhattan to safety in nearby areas.

- The FAA and Canadian Air Traffic Controllers at the small airport in Newfoundland who safely landed planes after US airspace was declared closed that morning, as well as the citizens of Gander and surrounding communities who welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers from 100 different countries into their small communities. Their generous hospitality has been dramatized in the Broadway Musical “Come From Away.”

- The indefatigable trained dogs who played a critical role during the rescue and recovery period including Trackr, the German shepherd who located the last survivor in the rubble the day after the attacks.

- The NYC Medical Examiner’s Office which has led the largest missing person investigation in history and continues, after 21 years, to use DNA technology to try to identify Victims in order to bring closure to their loved ones.

- The role of female First Responders during the day of the attacks, as well as the rescue and recovery period.

- Narratives of instances where people risked or sacrificed their lives to assist others during the attacks.
