The 70th Anniversary of the republic of Korea - U.S. Alliance

The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea shares its great excitement and pride to announce that it will be hosting an evening concert to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the ROK-U.S. Alliance on Thursday, February 9, 2023. The concert begins at 6:00 PM, and will be held in Cullen Performance Hall (1,500 seats) at the University of Houston.

This is the Consulate General’s most important public event of the year 2023, so special efforts have been made to elevate the occasion. In the center spotlight of the ‘From the New World’ concert will be Korea’s own Gwangju Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra has traveled far and wide to become internationally recognized as a leading classical orchestra. It is led by its world-class artistic director Seokwon Hong. Mr. Hong arrived at the helm following his great successes conducting in Germany, even winning third prize at the 100th anniversary Karajan Conducting Competition. The orchestra will perform Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, ‘from the New World.’ A piece thoughtfully selected to suit to this momentous anniversary, this was the Czech composer’s inspired bid to promote a distinctively American style of art music on the world stage.

The concert will be augmented by one more powerful musical collaboration: American pianist Kenny Broberg takes the stage in the first half of the evening to present Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor together with the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Broberg is a 2016 graduate of the UH Moores School of Music, 2021 winner of the American Pianists Award, and the Christel DeHaan Classical Fellow of the American Pianists Association. It is truly the ROK Consulate General’s high honor to be able to assemble all this talent of the pianist and orchestra under one roof.
