The 39 Steps – SOCIAL READ THROUGH

A fast-paced, inventive and hilariously theatrical adaptation of the classic thriller.
With just a small cast playing dozens of characters, The 39 Steps is a whirlwind of comedy, physical theatre and clever storytelling. Expect quick changes, inventive staging and plenty of laughs along the way.
Whether you’re thinking about auditioning, interested in helping backstage, or simply curious about the production, everyone is welcome to join us for our first reading of the script.
As always, the evening will be relaxed and social, with plenty of opportunities to meet the team, hear about the production, and enjoy a drink from the bar afterwards. No commitment is required at this stage – just come along and find out more.
The read through is open to both members and non-members.

🎭 Auditions

Audition pieces and further details will be released nearer the time.
At a minimum, the production will feature the four principal roles as written:
Richard Hannay
Pamela / Annabella / Margaret
Clown 1
Clown 2
However, we are currently exploring options to divide some of the supporting roles and character tracks, potentially creating opportunities for a larger cast and allowing more members to become involved in the production.
Further information on characters and casting requirements will be confirmed before auditions.
Auditions are open to both members and non-members, and we are always delighted to welcome new faces to the Playhouse.
🗓️ Rehearsals
Rehearsals are expected to begin in mid-December 2026 and will follow our usual Salterton Drama Club schedule of:
Tuesday evenings
Thursday evenings
Occasional Sunday sessions as required
Not all cast members may be required at every rehearsal, and a detailed schedule will be issued once casting has been completed.
This is one of the most inventive and entertaining plays ever written for the stage, combining mystery, comedy and theatrical magic in equal measure. If you’ve ever fancied tackling multiple characters, physical comedy, accents, quick costume changes or simply being part of something a little different, we’d love to see you at the read through.
