‘The 39 Steps’ is a highly acclaimed, fast-paced comedy thriller adapted for the stage from John Buchan’s 1915 novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s subsequent 1935 film. It tells the story of Richard Hannay, a man bored with life, who becomes embroiled in a dangerous espionage plot after a spy is murdered in his London flat. Framed for the crime, he escapes to Scotland, attempting to evade the police and a secret organisation known as "The 39 Steps".This adaptation was written by Patrick Barlow in 2005 and calls for the entirety of the adventure - featuring around 150 characters - to be performed by a cast of just four. One actor plays Hannay, another plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements and a final two take on every other role (heroes, villains, and even inanimate objects), sometimes playing multiple characters at once.
