Southgate Community Players is proud to announce auditions for their upcoming production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Sunday, November 24 and Monday, November 25 at the SCP Corner Playhouse. Callbacks will be held Tuesday, November 26 at 6:30 PM.Auditions will be held in 30 minute blocks starting at 6:30 PM. Auditionees are required to book a time slot and register in advance. We will try to accommodate walk-ins, but preference will be given to those registered. Please see the website for information regarding virtual auditions if you are unable to make one of the posted dates.
During your 30 minute audition block you will be asked to sing the audition cut for your first character choice. Accompaniment will be provided. There will also be a rudimentary review of a few basic dance steps.
Actors must be at least 18 at the time of the audition. Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition and will be considered for any and all roles. Roles will be played as the gender written, but actors are encouraged to audition as the gender they identify as. This will be an inclusive cast.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

CHARACTERS
SPELLERS may be played by adults of any age, but are played as approximately 11-13 years old:
Chip Tolentino (Male presenting, Tenor): Defending Spelling Bee champ. Popular jock. Going through changes.
Logainne Schwartzandgrubeniere (Female presenting, Mezzo): The youngest speller. Driven, politically aware, lives to impress her fathers. Improv skills a plus.
Leaf Coneybear (Male presenting, Tenor): Second runner-up who got lucky. Homeschooled, has ADD, having the time of his life.
William Barfee (Male presenting, Tenor): High-strung, a bit of a bully. Back for vengeance after an early elimination last year. Secret weapon: his “Magic Foot”.
Marcy Park (Female presenting, Mezzo): Multi-talented overachiever. Beset by high expectations, which she performs up to. A bit bottled up.
Olive Ostrovsky (Female presenting, Mezzo): Shy, inexperienced, a bit of a loner. Her best friend is the dictionary.
ADULTS may be played by adults of any age:
Rona Lisa Peretti (Female presenting, Mezzo): A former Spelling Bee champion turned moderator. Sweet and caring, but takes her job very seriously. Improv skills a plus.
Vice Principal Douglas Panch (Male presenting, non-singing role): Frustrated with his life, but “in a better place” after intensive diet and therapy. Not so secretly in love with Rona, who does not reciprocate. Improv skills highly encouraged.
Mitch Mahoney (Male presenting, Tenor): An ex-convict turned “Comfort Counselor” who does not know how to do either, but wishes he did.
Some actors will double as additional minor characters that appear throughout the show. There will be no ensemble; only these 9 roles will be cast.
