Texture Hunting on City Island: A Creative Walk & Zine Workshop

Explore texture, touch, and hands-on mark-making as you walk from Canning Town Station through London City Island and its riverside and industrial edges, creating your own Texture Archive along the way.

This is a hands-on creative workshop where we move through a mix of residential, industrial, and riverside environments—capturing traces of old and new through texture.

Using simple tools, you’ll press, print, and collect textures to build your own “Texture Archive” as you walk, ending at Layers Bakery for collaging and sharing.

Route & What to Expect

We’ll begin at Canning Town Station and walk together through East India Basin, along the riverside edges and toward Trinity Buoy Wharf, ending at Layers Bakery.

Along the way, you’ll be guided by prompts in your Texture Archive to stop and capture textures through pressing, rubbing, and collecting.

The walk is lightly facilitated—you’re welcome to follow the prompts at your own pace, pause where something catches your attention, or move ahead.

You’ll also receive a map ahead of time, so you won’t feel lost and can join along the route if you arrive later.

Materials

You’ll be working with simple, tactile tools including a kneadable eraser, ink stamp pad, crayons, and pencils to capture textures.

Each participant will receive a “Texture Archive” zine, along with collage materials to layer and respond to what you gather.

Who This Is For

This workshop is for creatively curious people who already enjoy making and want a new, more tactile way to explore their surroundings.

Suitable for adults and young people aged 12+ (with an accompanying adult). No prior experience needed.

About the Venue

Layers Bakery is run by three friends and artists, who have generously offered a warm and cosy space for an evening of crafting. Drinks and pastries baked in-house will be available to purchase throughout the session.
