About this Event
Join the British Museum’s Community Partnerships team for a special object-handling session at Chelsea Library and explore different textiles from the museum’s handling collection.
In this special session you will have the chance to handle real objects, learn about their cultural stories and uncover the rich traditions of these fascinating objects. Whether you’re curious about craftsmanship, heritage or simply love textiles, this session promises to be a meaningful and memorable experience.
Find out how resist-dying techniques are used to decorate textiles around the world, what natural materials are being transformed into textiles and how textiles can be powerful carriers of stories, messages and personal meaning.
This collaboration is part of the “Threads of Elegance: Conserving the Legacy of Beale and Inman tailors” (1828 - 1980) project of Westminster City Archives celebrating heritage and community engangement. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the St Jame’s Ward through Westminster City Council’s Ward Programme for the benefit of local residents.
The £3 booking fee is treated as a deposit, to reduce instances of non-attendance and ensure that spaces are allocated to those who are able to attend. The fee is refundable on request (minus Eventbrite's own administration fee), following attendance at the event. If you want to participate without paying this fee please write to [email protected] to request a space, or pick up a ticket from one of our library branches.
