About this Event
Program Description:
This in-person standardized program is 15 hours in length and designed to increase the knowledge of drug offenders by educating them on the dangers of drug abuse and associated illegal activities, to identify their own individual drug-use patterns, and to assist them in developing personal actions plans which reduce the probability of suffering the consequences of future drug using and illegal behavior. Specific course topics include history of drug abuse, drug/DWI laws, dynamics of drug use, drugs of abuse, how drugs work, costs of use and abuse, health issues, HIV, interpersonal relationships, the glamorization of drugs, values and behaviors, past and desired behaviors, getting control of your life, resource options, and personal action planning.
This class is open to the public and generally includes participants who have been placed on probation for a drug offense (misdemeanor and felony or court ordered) as well as persons from the community who require the class for driver’s license reinstatement (due to a prior drug conviction). However, this class may also be used as a sanction appropriate to offenders with a limited history of substance abuse or to help participants understand their vulnerabilities and drug use patterns to make necessary changes. Ultimately, drug offender education aims at steering individuals away from drug-related offenses by helping them draft and follow a personal action plan.
