Tessa Hadley: Turning Ordinary Lives into Fiction

How do great writers transform a family lunch, a train journey or an overheard conversation into something unforgettable?
In this special three-hour writing workshop, acclaimed novelist Tessa Hadley will work with participants on creating rich, emotionally resonant fiction from the ordinary moments that make up our lives.
Tessa will bring in paragraphs from writers she loves, and try to work out, through reading these closely, how fiction writers create character, tension, atmosphere – and those subtle moments of revelation that linger long after the final page.
One of Britain’s most admired novelists and the most frequently commissioned short story writer in The New Yorker, Hadley will guide participants through close reading, discussion and practical writing exercises designed to sharpen observation, deepen emotional insight and unlock new possibilities in their own work.
Whether you’re writing fiction already or looking to take your craft to the next level, you’ll leave with fresh inspiration, new techniques and a deeper understanding of how good writers achieve their unforgettable effects.
