CALLING ALL WOLF CHILDREN!Join dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours on National Werewolf Day for an illustrated Terror Talk on Ireland's deep relationship with wolves, both natural and supernatural.
Andrew will recall when Ireland had so many wild wolves, it was known by the English - who had long since exterminated theirs - as 'Wolfland'. Learn of the man tasked with slaying the last wolf in Ulster, and of the Irish wolf's final stand on Mount Leinster in 1786.
The wolf is a strong motif in Irish mythology, with tales of wolves with human voice, spraying blood and gore. Werewolves were said to emerge from the Cave of Cruachan every Samhain, while wolflike warrior Laignech Fáelad gave rise to the werewolves of Ossory.
Irish legends of bloodlines, curses and magic are believed to be among the earliest written stories about werewolves.
