THE BLOOD IS THE LIFE!Join dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours on World Dracula Day for an illustrated Terror Talk on the Irish influences on Bram Stoker when creating his immortal 1897 novel.
Andrew will explore Stoker's Dublin upbringing and inspirations for Dracula, including Ireland's complex undead folklore. The 5th-century Ulster legend of tyrannical dwarf sorcerer Abhartach is often cited as Europe's earliest vampire tale.
The night will also dig into Ireland's 'vampire graves', a relic of superstitious belief in 'revenants'. Certain feared individuals were staked before burial to prevent their walking corpse returning to terrorise the living.
Elsewhere, Andrew will illuminate a curious County Down connection to John Polidori's 1819 work The Vampyre, as well as revealing behind-the-scenes nuggets from the Northern Ireland shoot of 2014 prequel movie Dracula Untold.
