Seasons greetings from Terran’s Sunday Movie Night! This week we’re watching Jacqueline Audry’s landmark drama “Olivia” (1951). This drama was controversial on release, but has been reevaluated in resent years as an important feature in queer film history. Guests are encouraged to arrive around 18:00, with lights going down at 18:30. Popcorn will be provided as always, but feel free to bring along any other refreshments you might want!“Olivia” is a shocking and beautifully crafted drama about love and misery. Adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel, the film follows a young woman who has enrolled in a finishing school in France. There, she falls in love with the freedom of a place away from men, the enrichment of classical literature, and, crucially, the enchanting headmistress Mademoiselle Julie. The films focus on female relationships made it controversial on release, which is a shame, as it is a striking piece of filmmaking. Come by for a fascinating picture that is also (loosely) holiday themed. There is a Christmas party in the movie okay it counts.
