Educating the professional or training the worker: Keeping sight of Teacher Education in times of change
It is widely accepted that a key characteristic of a ‘professional’ includes the centrality of a specialised body of knowledge that is developed through a sustained period of professional education and training. The TEFANZ 2024 Conference sets out to provoke conversations around what it means to be ‘educated as a teacher’ and what it is to be ‘trained to be a teacher’. At a time where teacher education is subject to a plethora of political postures and promises, it is crucial to consider the inherent tensions within, and purpose of, teacher education in Aotearoa New Zealand.
