Writing (and Publishing!) for Teens
Are you interested in writing, looking to try a new creative outlet, or do you already love to write? Join Utah author Steve Capone, Jr. in a once-per-month writing workshop for teens at the Granite Library, running from August through December. He’s gone from “I’m the worst thing ever to happen to the written word” in high school to “I have a book set for nationwide release next year! Yippee!” and can help you find your own path, whether that means that you’re writing only for yourself, writing to see your story in print, or something in between. Build your confidence, find out where teens get published and how to work that system like a pro, and—most importantly—how to construct stories and follow through on completing them. Other author guests are possible, too!
Important Stuff:
The dates are below, and every meeting runs from 12:00-2:00 P.M. at the Granite branch of the Salt Lake County Library system.
(If this time and place do not work for you, there are later-in-the-afternoon events each of these Saturdays at the Whitmore branch)
Although the series is designed to be connected and we hope to see you at all five events, don’t feel bad or skip out if you can only make one or a few of them or if you find out about this series after it begins—there’s absolutely no requirement that you attend all if you attend any. We’ll just be glad to see you whenever you can attend.
You don’t need to bring anything to be successful except yourself. If you have a favorite writing journal or pen, though, definitely bring what helps you feel most comfortable!
When (every meeting runs 12:00-2:00 P.M.) (There's a 3 to 5pm session at whitmore, too!)

August 5th: "Where do story ideas come from?"
September 9th: "Structuring your story"
October 7th: "Writing your story"
November 4th: "Feedback: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"
(Utah Authors' Day is December 2nd, so find a participating Library or other location and go interact with some authors!)
Bonus session December 9th: "Publishing Our Stories"

Who’s Leading This Workshop?
Steve has been teaching (elementary, middle, high school, and college) since 2008, has been writing for longer, and he loves combining those two vocations. His forthcoming YA historical fiction novel, tentatively titled Jimmy vs. Communism, is set for major release in early 2024. In addition to YA, he writes across genres, including game literature and horror. He is a member of the professional Horror Writers’ Association (the ones who give out the Bram Stoker Awards) and the League of Utah Authors (home to many phenomenal Utah writers). He is a devoted pizza advocate, Pittsburgh Penguins fan, and dog rescuer.
