Teen Problematic Sexual Decisions: How they got there and how we can help!

Teens can make risky/problematic decisions when it comes to their sexual health, & we'll explore how they got there & how we can prevent it.
About this Event

Adolescent sexual behavior is varied and exists on continuum that ranges from normative and developmentally expected sexual behavior, to risky sexual behavior, to problematic and harmful sexual behavior. Teens who engage in high-risk sexual behaviors and/or sexual behavior that harms others are a highly misunderstood population and there are significant myths and misconceptions about why they engage in problematic sexual behavior (PSB) and what their futures can and will look like. These teens can cause significant negative outcomes to others through their behavior, and prevention and response to these behaviors is paramount. However, the most common responses to adolescents with problematic and risky sexual behaviors are often ineffective and are emotionally reactive, rather than based in evidence of what is most helpful. This presentation will dispel myths related to these teens by exploring the pathways to PSB, increase skills to attend to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of PSB, and to equip youth serving adults on the current landscape of sexual media that shapes teen behavior and norms.

NOTE: Registration does not include lunch. Participants will have a break from 12:00noon - 1:00pm for lunch on their own.

By the end of this training, participants will:

1. Define normative, risky, and problematic sexual behavior and understand the best practice community and clinical responses to these types of behavior.
2. Improve their understanding of youth with PSB, the pathways to this behavior, and recidivism rates with and without treatment.
3. Identify education and skills most relevant for adolescents and their families.
4. Know community resources for responding to PSB.
