Percussionist Ted Byrnes and artist Olivia Booth continue their collaboration in this performance, where Ted will play Olivia's glass artworks as percussive objects, in 3 different settings within the Library at The Philosophical Research Society.

The concerts on the campus of the Philosophical Research Society aim to bring listener and creator together for one transcendent experience. In his essay “Philosophy of Music”, Manly Hall wrote: “The primary purpose of art is to interpret. It seeks to convey an impression by which we share with the artist some conviction or ideal as a result of an emotional impact.” The intimate performancesprogrammed at PRS allow for an impactful and connective experience for all. We strive to provide a space for artists inspired by the beauty around them and within, and take listeners to undiscovered terrain.

OLIVIA BOOTH

Olivia Booth’s work is a longtime exploration on the spectrum between transparency and opacity, predominantly pairing and collaging glass and drawing. She focuses on how glass in our digital age speaks to us about polishing our personal and collective lens. Her work has been shown in galleries nationally and written about in multiple publications, and she is a recent recipient of the COLA-IMAP award and the Hopper Prize. Born and raised in New York City, in 2000 she moved to Los Angeles and received her MFA in Visual Arts from ArtCenter College of Design. Before that she received her BFA in Painting and BA in Comparative Literature from Cornell University. She has taught at the college level for over two decades and also from her own studio school, TheDrawingStudio, around the corner from PRS. She relishes the relationship between teaching and making art.

TED BYRNES

Ted Byrnes is a drummer/percussionist living in Los Angeles. An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, he comes from a jazz background and has since made his home in the worlds of free improvisation, new music, electro-acoustic music, and noise.
Ted primarily works in ad hoc improvisational settings, but has standing improvisational groups including, a duo with Jeff Parker, a duo with Chris Cooper (AQH), a duo with Charlie Mumma, a duo with Sam McKinlay, a duo with William Hutson, a trio with Jacob Wick and Michael Foster, among others. Additionally, Ted has played in duo/trio/or ensemble settings with: Mazen Kerbaj, Matt Weston, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Charlemagne Palestine, Alfred 23 Harth, Arrington de Dionyso, Jaap Blonk, Torsten Muller, Kim Myhr, Jim Denley, Lloyd Honeybrook, Chris Schlarb, Mike Watt, Paul Masvidal, the LAFMS (including Smegma, Airway, Ace Farren Ford’s Artificial Art Ensemble, Rick and Joe Potts, Fredrik Nilsen, Tom Recchion, Vetza, etc), Sissy Spacek (the band), Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and more.
Ted’s recorded output oscillates between heavily acoustic music and harsh noise while keeping a similar approach.
Ted has also collaborated with / worked for a variety of visual artists: he has accompanied a Doug Aitken “happening”, scored and performed percussion for an Emily Mast performance, collaborated with Olivia Booth to play her glass artworks, performed accompanying a sound installation by Thomas Bayrle and Bernhard Schreiner, and has performed for FLUXUS artist Jeff Perkins on multiple occasions for his projector/light installations.
Currently, Ted is delving further into the possibilities and realities of solo drumset and percussion performance in addition to continuing to work with his existing projects.

PARKING​

We encourage attendees to consider carpooling, walking or biking to events if possible, and please be considerate of our Los Feliz neighbors when parking. Street parking is available on Griffith Park Blvd. and (after 7 PM) on Los Feliz Blvd. Limited parking is available onsite at PRS in the front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east). PRS EVENT POLICIES

• We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
• Events are subject to change without notice, including guest speakers and/or performers.
• We encourage you to arrive at least 30 min. before the scheduled event start time to find parking, enjoy the Bookstore, and take your seats.
• Please turn off all mobile devices before the show. Talking and texting are not allowed during the events.
• No filming, audio recording or mobile phone recording of events, screenings, concerts or other programs by audience members is allowed without permission.
• There is no smoking permitted on PRS grounds.
• We strongly encourage guests to wear masks to PRS events to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
• PRS allows Service Animals into the facility under ADA and state guidelines. For further details please visit www.ADA.gov. No animals permitted whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support, under ADA guidelines and CA Health Code.
• Please do not bring outside food or drink into PRS events.
• Weapons are strictly prohibited at PRS events.
