About this Event
By the end of this three-session workshop, you'll understand how to take a fashion concept and translate it into a clear, technically sound, production-ready garment. You'll walk away with hands-on skills in Technical Design and a Certificate of Completion to showcase your new abilities.
This beginner-friendly workshop introduces you to the essential skills and terminology used in the fashion industry. Over three days, you'll explore the role of a Technical Designer and learn how technical design connects design, patternmaking, sewing, fit, construction, and production.
Session Dates: This workshop meets for three in-person sessions, each from 5:00-7:00 PM

You must sign up for the entire workshop; individual sessions are not available. Must attend all classes to receive Certificate of Completion
Topics covered:
- Understanding a tech pack and what information it contains
- Reading and creating basic technical flats
- Garment construction terminology and specifications
- Measurements, points of measure (POMs), and size specifications
- Understanding fit comments and communicating fit corrections
- Basic measurement/spec sheets
- Introduction to bill of materials (BOMs) and garment components
- Fabric, trims, labels, closures, and construction details
- Understanding the sample development process
- How a technical designer works within a fashion production team
- Professional terminology and communication used in the industry

Meet your instructor:
Doreen Avilés is a fashion industry professional with over two decades of extensive experience in Technical Design, product development, fit, and manufacturing. Throughout her career, she has worked closely with Designers, Merchandising, Product Development, Production teams, patternmakers, and both domestic and overseas factories to bring garments from concept through development and into production. Doreen is passionate about helping emerging designers understand the technical side of fashion and how a strong technical foundation can help protect their creative vision and bring their designs successfully to life.
