About this Event

Experience the journey of fresh produce from farm to table like never before! Join York U Food Services for a hands-on tour of the farm, where you'll explore everything from the vibrant market garden to the buzzing beehives and flourishing fruit trees. Discover how each element plays a vital role in creating a delicious, sustainable meal.

Immerse yourself in the process as we delve into how food reaches our grocery stores, the problem of food waste, our reliance on fossil fuels for food transport and the impact of our food system on climate change. You'll also learn practical ways to take action.

You'll have the opportunity to harvest, taste and prepare fresh foods straight from the garden. Come ready to savour the fruits of your labour and leave with a deeper connection to the food you eat.

A few important details:

  • Black Creek Community Farm is an 8-acre working educational farm, as such there will be farmers working and tools being used on site. As well, there may be other groups on site at the farm. Please understand that we will take every measure possible to keep your group safe and to ensure that they will not be put in harm’s way.
  • Here is the map and location of the farm. Please note that the farm is NOT at Pioneer Village. If you are taking the TTC bus, please have the bus driver stop the bus on Jane St. and enter through the south gate. If you are driving, parking is available for a limited number of cars through the south gate on Jane St. The farm is TTC accessible. Look for a very large colourful mural on the fence! If coming from Glendon or Markham, check the shuttle schedules to Keele, the farm is a few minutes walking distance from the Keele campus.
  • Dress for the weather including closed toe shoes and wear clothing that is easy to move around in and that can get dirty. The program will run rain or shine, trips are only cancelled if an Environment Canada Weather warning is issued.
  • There is an outdoor storage area for bags and coats. Please leave all valuables at home or keep them with you while visiting as we are a busy farm in the city and therefore cannot be responsible for your valuables.
  • Bring with you a re-usable water bottle. There is potable water, available on the farm.
  • Bring your snacks with you as this will be a 4-hour event.
  • Please arrive on time for your programming, we have a lot planned for the day and we cannot extend the trip due to late arrival.
  • This tour registration fee is being sponsored by Food Services and therefore there is no registration fee for participants. However, if you are unable to attend, you must cancel your registration at least 48 hours prior to the event.
  • Cancellations/No shows. No shows and cancellations less than 48 hours will result in a $20 charge to your Flex account.
