Black Women as Primary Story: Teaching Black Women’s Stories from the Schomburg Archives

In honor of Women’s History Month, teachers are invited to an educator workshop focused on the Schomburg’s Black Women’s Stories series, part of the a series of ready-to-use curriculum guides that draw on unique primary sources to help educators in teaching Black history, experience, and culture. Participants will get an in-depth look at the curricula, including historical context, sample lessons, and strategies for where and how to use the materials in the classroom.

Black Women's Stories: Curriculum Guides

This unit highlights some of the ways Black women have defined themselves and their place in society from slavery to the present. Through the critical analysis of cultural objects—including poems, photographs, newspaper clips, and protest flyers—students will explore stories of activism, self-expression, artistic freedom, and sisterhood.

Space is limited! Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis (up to 25 attendees). Light refreshments will be provided for those attending. Eligible NYS teachers will receive 1.5 hours of CTLE credit.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

ACCESSIBILITY | Live captioning is available for streaming programs. ASL interpretation and real-time (CART) captioning available upon request. Please submit your request at least two weeks in advance by emailing [email protected].

FIRST COME, FIRST SEATED Events are free and open to all, but due to space constraints registration is requested. Registered guests are given priority check-in 15 to 30 minutes before start time.
