About this Event
Teachers on the Estuary - Kachemak Bay Ecosystems
This three-day training will be a blend of classroom and field-based in-person learning sessions about Alaskan coastal ecosystems. We'll discuss coastal science topics, issues around harmful and harvestable species, and what we can do to reduce the impacts of environmental change and make our communities more resilient.
Wednesday, August 4th will start with classroom and lab based learning sessions and then move to field site visits at the Reserve in Homer, AK. Thursday, August 5th will begin with a boat trip for field based learning components and an overnight stay at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies Peterson Bay Field Station. Thursday and Friday August 6th will have time for informal peer sharing, curriculum development and technical assistance for bringing lessons learned and content back to your classroom. Please note: schedule is tentative and subject to change based on state and University guidelines related to COVID-19.
Formal and informal educators are welcome to register. Participants will be eligible for early access to sign up for in-classroom programs delivered by KBNERR staff in Fall 2021, and one-on-one technical assistance to implement curriculum in the classroom or in field-based projects. Participants can also elect to register for a continuing education credit for a fee through Kenai Peninsula College, Kachemak Bay Campus (ED A580 course CRN# 52111 for the Summer 2021 semester for $79.00).
Participants must attend all sessions or work with the instructor for alternative modules. The training will include optional pre-work to review current education resources and environmental monitoring data.
