Teach For Nepal (TFN) Walkathon is an annual solidarity walk event organized to raise awareness of education inequity in Nepal and raise the resources required to support the work of Teach For Nepal. On Saturday, July 23, 2022, 1000 college students, young professionals, and anyone interested in supporting the cause and who is committed to raising Rs. 1,000 each will walk for about 5 Kilometers within Kathmandu valley. The event will culminate in a closing ceremony featuring musical performances from participating students and a special musical day with Nepal's famous folk instrumental band "Kutumba." Also, celebrities and leaders from different sectors will also speak at the event.
Students attending public schools come from low-income families and socially marginalized communities. In rural Nepal, children in Teach For Nepal Fellows come to school on foot, walking long distances. Some of our students walk as long as 3 hours one way to get to the school. Imagine not getting a teacher inside the classroom after this long walk. But this is one of many realities with which most of our students in public school are living and as youths working in the community, we want to bring this pressing issue to the people in power and to the larger mass - that the basic rights of our students are in serious crisis.
TFN Walkathon is thus a solidarity walk to commit ourselves that no children, regardless of socioeconomic status, will be left behind. Through Walkathon, we symbolically express our determination to walk with the children to ensure that every single one of them has the same opportunity and choices that children who attend Nepal's private schools have.
