Hiding in Plain Sight: Eating Disorders in Outpatient Care
Maria Orlikoski, MBA, RDN, LD, CEDS
Eating disorders are the second deadliest psychiatric illness, yet they routinely go unrecognized in outpatient settings. Patients can present at any weight, age, gender, or background, and the clinical picture often hides under more familiar diagnoses like depression, anxiety, GI issues, or even "successful" weight loss on GLP-1s.
This presentation dismantles the myths that keep eating disorders invisible. Attendees will spot ED presentations across body sizes, ages, genders, and cultures, including frequently missed populations: men, BIPOC and AAPI clients, LGBTQIA+ patients, older adults, athletes, people with T1D, and the disability community.
Participants leave with validated screeners, a biopsychosocial risk framework, clear referral and level of care pathways, and evidence-based interventions matched to dietitian and therapist roles, all anchored in peer reviewed literature.
Objectives:
- Recognize ED presentations across body sizes, ages, genders, and cultures
- Screen for medical and psychiatric risk and decide when to escalate
- Apply evidence-based treatment interventions appropriate to their role
