An Afternoon Celebration of Our Community’s History, with the Real Rosie the Riveters of WWII
Join us for tea and delectable sandwiches, savories, and sweets at the elegant and historic Newton of Ypsilanti, and meet and mingle with several of the real “We Can Do it” women who worked in area factories during World War II. These women of our Greatest Generation, as eyewitnesses to the most momentous events of the 20th century, are living history! They carry the grace and wisdom of their years, and are a joy to be with.
The afternoon includes an informative program with an introduction to the WWII Rosies and WWII Veterans present, speaker Jeannette Gutierrez of the American Rosie the Riveter Association on “How Rosie Won the War,” and a special appearance by recording artist Corey Strong singing selected wartime songs to live piano accompaniment. Artifacts of the era such as ration stamps, sweetheart jewelry, and a rivet gun, will be on display, and photo ops available with real and/or costumed Rosie the Riveters. Learn little known facts of our local WWII history: Did you know that Phyllis Diller, Walter Pidgeon, Gloria Swanson, and Marilyn Monroe all have a *local* Rosie the Riveter connection? Vintage costume or polka-dot attire encouraged but not required.
