About this Event
Event Description
Discover the timeless elegance of the Japanese tea ceremony as part of “Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill, and Spirit” exhibition. On select Tuesday afternoons this winter, visitors can experience a “pop-up” tea ceremony within the gallery itself, and join JAPAN HOUSE staff who will share with guests insightful details about the history, construction, and use of the historic Sa-an Teahouse on display. As January is “National Hot Tea Month”, it’s the perfect opportunity to sample and savor tea elevated to an art form.
Originally designed in the late 16th century by the renowned tea master Sen no Rikyu, the Sa-an teahouse provides an ideal space to immerse in the rich and diverse heritage of the tea ceremony. The Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyu or chadō ("the way of tea"), is a centuries-old practice that transcends the simple act of serving tea (to learn more about the history of Japanese tea, read an article from our archive). This carefully choreographed tradition embodies Japanese philosophical and artistic principles, and creates a meditative space of hospitality and mindfulness that continues to resonate in the modern age.
On January 7 and 14, guests will experience the Urasenke tea ceremony, led by experts from the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association. This school of tea ceremony is known for its distinctive approach to aesthetics, from the way matcha is whisked to the rotation of tea bowls before serving, and an emphasis on visual balance in presentation.
Join us for an inspiring afternoon of mindful relaxation that illuminates the unique intersection of tea culture and Japanese craft.
