"The Aesthetics of Gentrification," a discussion on aesthetic theory and gentrification in Southside Chicago
About this Event

What does gentrification look like? How can we understand it as an aesthetic experience? Through movies, songs, buildings, or neighborhoods, aesthetic objects help us understand gentrification and its networks of relationships. By providing a toolkit of aesthetic theories from thinkers like Theodor Adorno and Fredric Jameson, this lecture will examine spaces of disinvestment, gentrification, and community-based development in Woodlawn, Chicago.

Grab a cup of tea and join us to learn from and with Jared Hackworth '22, English Ph.D. candidate at University of Illinois Chicago. He is currently a Metropolitan Exchange Scholar at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University and works with The School of The New York Times. His work appears in The Henry James Review, MidAmerica, and The Chicago Classical Review.

This in-person public lecture is hosted by the Wheaton College Center for Urban Engagement (CUE) at our Chicago campus, located in the neighborhood of Woodlawn. Don't miss out on this chance to relax, learn, and enjoy lively conversation. See you there!
