This workshop will give participants a broad overview of the history of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the content of Te Tiriti and The Treaty, and its relevance to Aotearoa New Zealand society today. Delivered by Project Waitangi Manawatū. Project Waitangi was launched in 1986 to raise awareness of the Treaty among non-Māori. Through educational workshops and resource material Project Waitangi assist Pākehā and other Tauiwi as tangata Tiriti (people of the Treaty) to honour our Treaty responsibilities. Project Waitangi workshops also study the effects of colonisation, institutional and personal racism, and aim to support tangata Tiriti to implement creative and equitable Treaty-based relationships with tangata whenua. They are committed to structural and institutional change based on the Māori language text of the Treaty of Waitangi.
In the Manawatū, Project Waitangi continues to offer Te Tiriti training pre-dominantly to tauiwi, although Māori frequently attend as well. Over the years Project Waitangi have had input from Rangitāne to endeavour to uphold the mana of Tangata Whenua in the training process, including Sir Mason Durie and Roly Fitzgerald.
