Renowned creative writing educator Te Kahu Rolleston (Ngāi Te Rangi) presents, for the first time ever, his personal approach to teaching.
About this Event

Schools around the country keep me extremely busy visiting and inspiring students to write. Actually, I believe inspiring students to write isn't quite the correct term. What I try my best to do is to show them the joy and safety I was able to find within language: a way to engage with writing that looked after my own mauri and mana as a whakamā writer.

Te Kahu Rolleston (Ngāi Te Rangi) is one of the most sought after creative writing educators in Aotearoa. While his slam poetry or rap is commonly requested, the questions he fields most often are around his teaching. How does one capture and hold the attention of over 300 disinterested high school students? How do you get the whakamā student to present their work for the first time? How do you motivate and inspire ākonga to try creative writing? Te Kahu's Pānui, Te Tukanga Ako, presents for the first time his personal approach to teaching. It fuses deeply personal recollection with instructional ako, exploring how these elements inform and shape each other in the classroom and beyond.

Join us to experience the transformative power of Te Kahu's ako in what promises to be an unforgettable Pānui.

Entry is free, but seating is limited so bookings are essential. Each attendee will receive a limited run copy of this year's Pānui publication.

Come along at 5.30pm for a 6pm start, and please join us for a short drinks reception in the foyer following the Pānui. Note that the Pānui is held in the auditorium (entry off Aitken St) rather than in the National Library foyer.

About the Pānui

The Read NZ Te Pou Muramura Pānui (formerly the Book Council's Annual Lecture) is a prominent part of the literary landscape in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It provides an opportunity for a leader within the literary sphere to breathe new life into reading and writing.
