"Within These Walls" is an award-winning multimedia work by Lenora Lee Dance integrating poetry, original music, video projection, and contemporary dance. Inspired by the experiences of the more than 170,000 Chinese immigrants who were unjustly detained at the Angel Island Immigration Station in the early 20th century, the work is a meditation on healing, resilience, and compassion. "Within These Walls" premiered in 2017 as a site-specific performance on Angel Island. The work is being re-staged at UC Berkeley with a cast of 14 students for Berkeley Dance Project, an annual dance concert.
