OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Oklahoma City residents will gather to recognize the 11th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), on Sunday, November 20, 2022. On this day the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence will be honored. The event, hosted by The Gayly newspaper and the Diversity Center of Oklahoma Inc., will be held from 6:00p to 7:00 p.m., in a candle light vigil life celebration. Services will be held in the Diversity Center Parking Lot. The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is observed annually on November 20 as a day to memorialize those who have been a victim of criminal violence as a result of transphobia and to draw attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community.
"Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lost are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice,” said Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith. Smith started the Transgender Day of Remembrance in 1999 as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.
The Gayly & Diversity Center of Oklahoma collaborate with local advocacy organizations that will be present to discuss relevant issues facing our transgender community. TDOR Participants will listen to local transgender/two-spirit/gender diverse community leaders, family members as they honor and remember loved ones that have been lost over the past year.
The public is encouraged to attend this family friendly event.
